On the web, JPG and PNG are effectively the standard, but the story changes when you hand artwork to a print shop or need to keep records for decades. In those domains TIFF has been a trusted format for a long time. Many people have heard the name but never actually used it, yet understanding why TIFF works well for both printing and archiving can genuinely improve the quality of your results.

This article explains what TIFF's core trait — being "lossless" — really means, when to pick it over JPG or PNG, and how to fit it into real print and archive workflows.

What Lossless Actually Means

JPG is a "lossy" format. To shrink the file, it throws away information your eyes are unlikely to notice, and the quality degrades a little every time you save. Once discarded, that information cannot be recovered. TIFF, by contrast, is lossless: it preserves the original pixels exactly. You can re-save it any number of times without losing quality.

PNG is also lossless and comparable in quality, but PNG was designed for web graphics and sometimes can't carry all the color information or metadata that print work needs. TIFF differs in that it was built with the publishing and printing industry in mind from the start.

Why TIFF Wins for Printing

Print demands far higher resolution than a screen, and even small quality losses show up on paper. Artwork delivered as JPG can carry visible compression traces straight into the printed result. TIFF has no compression damage, which makes it ideal for quality-critical print pieces such as photo books, flyers, and posters.

  • No compression artifacts (blocking or smearing), so photos and gradients print cleanly.
  • Transparent backgrounds (the alpha channel) are preserved, so logos and composites transfer intact.

Libraries, museums, and government bodies often adopt TIFF as the standard when preserving digital materials. Because it is lossless the quality stays intact over time, and the format itself has remained stable for decades, so files are likely to remain openable far into the future. When you keep a digitized original as a master file, TIFF is a sensible choice.

In practice it is common to archive the master as TIFF and export a separate JPG from it for sharing or web publishing. With a lossless master, you can always re-convert to whatever quality you need later, which keeps you flexible.
