FAQ
- What is HEIC and why won't it open?
- HEIC (HEIF) is the high-efficiency format iPhones and iPads use to store photos by default. It packs the same quality into a smaller file, but it doesn't open by default on Windows, older Android devices, or some websites. Converting to JPG makes it open anywhere.
- Should I pick JPG or PNG?
- For everyday photos, JPG is a good fit thanks to its small size and broad compatibility. Choose PNG when you need lossless archiving or transparency for compositing. Note that photos can grow significantly larger as PNG.
- Will the quality drop?
- Converting to PNG preserves pixels losslessly. JPG re-compresses, so there is slight loss, but at the default 0.92 it's hard to tell by eye. If quality matters, raise the slider or use PNG.
- Are my photos sent anywhere?
- No. HEIC decoding and conversion all happen inside your browser. Photos are never uploaded to a server and disappear from memory the moment you close the page.
- Why is the conversion slow?
- The first conversion downloads and initializes the HEIC decoder (WASM), which can take a few seconds. Once it's loaded, subsequent files convert much faster.
